Magazine view with page-flip effect

Magazine view shows your PDF as double-page spreads with the cover on its own. When a publication opens in Magazine view, its pages turn with an animation (in selected plans).

Updated

Magazine view shows your PDF as double-page spreads, the way a printed magazine lies open: page 1 is the cover on its own, followed by pages 2–3, 4–5 and so on. When a publication opens in Magazine view and your plan includes the page-flip effect, the pages turn with an animation.

Open a publication in Magazine view

  1. New uploads: in the Workspace, set Default viewer mode to Magazine.
  2. A dynamic PDF: open it with Edit Project and choose Magazine at the top left of the editor. The info button next to it explains both options.
  3. A static PDF: click the view icon on its project tile to switch between Scroll view and Magazine view.

Readers can also switch a publication that opens in Scroll view to Magazine with the view button. They then see the spreads without the animation.

The page-flip effect – and Magazine as the start view – is included in Publisher, Publisher Plus, Premium and Tailored. In plans without it, the Workspace and the editor don’t offer Magazine as the start view. If your plan no longer includes it, publications that already open in Magazine keep it, and the pages turn without the animation.

Turn the pages

  • Click the arrows at the left and right edge of the viewer, or the arrows in the top bar. Both move one spread.
  • With the page-flip effect, you can also drag a page by its outer edge – with the mouse or a finger.
  • Keyboard: Alt/Option + Page Down for the next spread, Alt/Option + Page Up for the previous one.
  • Readers who have reduced motion switched on in their system see the next spread at once, without the animation.

Single pages on phones

When the screen is too narrow for two readable pages – a phone held upright, for example – Magazine view shows one page at a time. Turn the phone or widen the window, and the spreads come back.

For an embed on your website, choose under Magazine pages in the embed window: 2 pages shows spreads where the embed is at least 640 pixels wide and single pages on phones; 1 page always shows one page.

Zoom

  • At 100 %, the page or spread fits the screen. Magazine view never gets smaller than that.
  • The zoom buttons go in steps: 125, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 400 %.
  • Double-click or double-tap a spot to zoom to 200 % right there; do it again to fit the spread back.
  • While a page is enlarged, dragging moves it; use the arrows to turn the page.
  • When the top bar is hidden, two small − and + tabs next to its handle zoom the page.

PDFs that already contain double pages

If your PDF already contains double-page spreads, Viewnamic detects them during the upload and splits them into normal single pages. That way the cover, the spreads and the single pages on phones work as described above. If those wide pages are rotated, rotate them back in your PDF before uploading – Viewnamic tells you when this is needed.

Good to know

  • If a publication opens in Magazine view, Scroll view and Grid view show its spreads too, and Presentation is not offered.
  • With an even number of pages, the last page stands alone as the back cover.
  • In the editor you place videos and other content on the spread. If an area reaches across both pages, move it onto one page before you switch the publication back to Scroll view.

Questions

Does the page-flip effect also work in embeds?

Yes. An embedded publication that opens in Magazine view turns its pages the same way, as long as your plan includes the page-flip effect.
