Image detection: let the editor find areas for you

Upload the picture that sits where your video or other content belongs: the Viewnamic editor finds it on your PDF pages and places an area over it. Pictures it cannot find are marked for you to draw by hand.

Updated

If the spot for your content shows a picture – a video still, a product photo, a screenshot – the editor can place the area for you. Click Upload images in the right column and upload that picture as a JPG or PNG file. Viewnamic searches the pages of your PDF for it and puts an area the size of the picture over it. You then fill the area with a video, an audio file or other content as usual.

Step by step

  1. Open your PDF in the editor (see Editor basics).
  2. Click Upload images in the right column – or the link of the same name in the welcome text – and choose one or several pictures. You can also drag the files onto the button or onto the list of areas.
  3. In a PDF with more than 10 pages, a window asks where to search for each picture. Enter a page number to search only that page, or leave the field empty to search every page, and click Use selected pages; Search all pages searches every page for all pictures. With Magazine as the start view, you choose from a list of double pages instead (Use selected spreads or Search all spreads). Closing the window cancels the upload.
  4. Keep the editor open while Viewnamic uploads the pictures and searches the pages. A progress window shows Please wait – images are being detected.
  5. Check the list in the right column (see below) and fill each area: click it on the page, or one of the content icons in its row, and choose a video, audio file, 3D model, click dummy, slideshow or link.
  6. Publish with Save (new PDF) or Replace (saved publication).

What the list shows

  • Every picture that was found gets an area on its page and a row with the page number. The legend below the list explains the colours: Dynamic content missing, Needs editing and Completed.
  • Point at the picture icon in the column Static to see which picture a row belongs to.
  • Each picture gets one area – where it matches best. If the same picture appears more than once, add the other areas with Add area.
  • Pictures that were not found are listed with Needs editing, without an area on the page.

When a picture is not found

Go to the page with the picture, click the pencil icon in its row, draw the area on the page and click Save. The row then becomes a normal area. If you don’t need it, click Delete in the same window. You move or resize a found area the same way.

Viewnamic only places an area where the page shows your picture almost exactly:

  • Use the same picture as in the PDF, with the same crop – for example the image file from your layout or a screenshot of exactly that spot. A similar photo is not enough.
  • Your file may be larger or smaller than the picture on the page – Viewnamic tries different sizes. Very small pictures on a page may not be found.
  • With Magazine as the start view, Viewnamic searches each double page as a whole, so a picture that runs across the fold can be found too.

Limits and plans

  • Only JPG and PNG files work, up to 500 MB each; other image types are refused.
  • The pictures are stored with the project and count toward your storage.
  • The search runs in your browser and first prepares every page, so it takes longer for long PDFs. As for the rest of the editor, use a computer.

Found areas are empty and do not count toward your plan. An area counts toward your plan’s total of interactive content once you fill it with a video, audio file, 3D model, click dummy or slideshow; link areas never count. See Plans and limits.

Questions

Do readers see the pictures I upload for the search?

No. The pictures only show the editor where the areas belong. Readers see your PDF page and the content you put into each area; empty areas are not shown.

Why was my picture not found?

The page has to show the picture almost exactly. Upload the same image with the same crop – for example a screenshot of that spot – or draw the area yourself with the pencil icon in its row.

Can I search for more pictures later?

Yes. Click “Upload images” again at any time. New areas are added, and the existing ones stay.
