Links in a PDF: existing links and link areas
Links already in your PDF keep working in the Viewnamic viewer. In the editor you can also make any area of a page clickable and link it to a website, an email address or a phone number.
Links that are already in your PDF keep working in the Viewnamic viewer: web links open in a new tab, and links inside the document – such as a table of contents – jump to their page. In the editor you can also make any area of a page clickable and link it to a website, an email address or a phone number. Link areas are part of every plan.
Links already in your PDF
Links you create in your layout or office program need no extra step. Web links open in a new tab, so readers keep your publication open. Links to another page of the document jump there in the viewer.
Add a link area
- Open your PDF in the editor (see Editor basics).
- Click Add area, drag a rectangle over the button, text or picture that should be clickable, and click Save.
- Click the area and open the Link tab – or click the link icon next to the area in the right column.
- Enter the address under Link, for example https://example.com, mailto:info@example.com or tel:+49301234567.
- Under Published viewer behavior, choose New tab or Same tab.
- Click Save link and publish with Save or Replace.
In the editor, a click on a finished link area always opens a new tab, so you can test it safely.
What readers see
A link area is lightly tinted on the page. When readers point at it, a frame and a link icon appear; a click opens the address. Keyboard users reach it with Tab.
Good to know
- Link areas never count toward your plan’s total of interactive content.
- New tab is usually the better choice. Same tab replaces the publication with the linked page – in an embed on your website, inside the embed frame.
- If your plan includes statistics, you see in how many visits each link area was clicked (see Publication statistics).
- In the viewer and the Reading Mode on viewnamic.com, the links in publications of paid plans are normal links that search engines can count for your website. During the free trial, they are marked as user content.
Questions
Can a link area jump to another page of the same PDF?
Link areas open web addresses, email and phone links. For a jump within the document, set the link in your PDF before you upload it – the viewer follows it to the page.
Can I change a link later?
Yes. In the editor, click the link icon next to the area in the right column, change the address, click Save link and publish with Replace.
