Link to a specific page in your PDF
Add #page= and a page number to a publication’s link, and it opens at that page – in Magazine view at the double page. #reading opens the text version instead. This guide shows how, and what works with secure links and embeds.
To open a publication at a certain page, add #page= and the page number to the end of its link, for example viewnamic.com/publication/profile/publication/#page=12. Whoever opens the link sees page 12 – in Magazine view the double page with page 12. To open the text version instead of the PDF, add #reading.
Create a link to a page
- In the Workspace, copy the publication’s link from its project tile – it is shown next to Link. Or click Open PDF and copy the address from your browser’s address bar.
- Add #page= and the page number to the end of the link, for example …/#page=12.
- Send the link by email or chat, or put it on your website or in a newsletter.
The number counts the pages of the PDF, starting with 1 for its first page. It is the number the page field in the top bar shows – not necessarily the number printed on the page.
What readers see
- The publication opens in its start view and goes to the page. In Scroll view, readers see that page. In Magazine view, they see the double page that contains it: #page=5 shows pages 4 and 5, and page 1 is the cover on its own. Where Magazine view shows single pages – on phones or in an embed set to 1 page – they see exactly that page.
- Apart from the Reading Mode (below), a link cannot choose the view – Grid view or Presentation, for example. Readers switch the view themselves (Views in the viewer).
- A number above the last page opens the last page. 0, or a word instead of a number, opens the first page.
Link to the Reading Mode
Add #reading instead of #page= to open the publication’s text version: …/#reading. The Reading Mode then opens at the beginning of the text. You can also open it from the Workspace: open the project’s ⋯ menu, choose Accessibility information and click Open the Reading Mode in the section Reading Mode. A new tab opens with this link in its address bar.
#reading and #page= cannot be combined. If a publication has no text version – a scanned PDF, for example – the link opens the PDF as usual (Reading Mode).
Share the page you are reading
The address in the browser does not change while you turn the pages. To send someone the page you are on, look at the page field in the top bar and add #page= with that number to the publication’s link (on narrow phone screens the page field is hidden). A link copied from the address bar keeps the page number it was opened with, even after you have turned the pages.
Readers of an embed see the address of the website around it. Adding #page= to that address does not move the embed.
Secure links, changed links and embeds
- Personal secure links: add #page= to the personal link before you send it. After the recipient has entered the code, the PDF opens at that page (Share a PDF securely).
- Changed links: after Customize Link, the old address forwards readers to the new one and keeps the page number (Share the link to your PDF).
- New edition or new PDF version: a page link opens that page number in the PDF the link shows today. If you move the link to a new edition, or upload a new PDF version with pages added or removed, check the page links you have shared.
- Embeds on your website: the embed window has no setting for a start page, so an embed starts at the first page. To start it at another page, add #page= and the number to the end of the embed address yourself – the one from Copy URL, or the same address in the embed code, right before its closing quotation mark. If an embedded publication opens in a new tab for fullscreen, the tab shows the page the reader was on.
Links to a page and to the Reading Mode work in every plan, also in the free trial.
Questions
Can I link to a certain page of the Reading Mode?
No. #reading always opens the text at its beginning. In the Reading Mode, readers can type a page number into the page field and press Enter to jump to the place where that page begins in the text.
Can the embed on my website start at a certain page?
Not through a setting: the embed window has none, so an embed starts at the first page. You can add #page= and the page number to the end of the embed address yourself – the one from “Copy URL”, or the same address in the embed code, right before its closing quotation mark. Changing an option in the embed window creates the code again, without your addition. You can also link to the publication’s own address with #page=, for example in a sentence below the embed.
Why does the link open a different page than I expected?
#page= counts the pages as the viewer shows them – the number in the page field – from the very first one, including the cover. Printed page numbers often start later. If Viewnamic split double pages of your PDF into single pages at upload, each of them counts. Where Magazine view shows double pages, the link shows the whole double page, and the page field shows its left page.
