In a world where urban mobility and environmental protection are increasingly important, electric scooters represent an innovative solution to many of the challenges faced by modern cities. These vehicles offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional combustion engines and support the pursuit of a more sustainable and quieter urban environment.

The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the benefits, operation, and technological and societal aspects of electric scooters. It aims to convey to readers the ecological and economic advantages of these vehicles and provide insights into the technical innovations that drive them.

Ecological & Economical Benefits of Electric Scooters

Electric scooters offer numerous advantages that make them an attractive option for urban mobility. These benefits include environmental friendliness, cost efficiency, reduced noise pollution, and spacesaving qualities due to their smaller size compared to vehicles, making them an ideal mode of transportation in densely populated urban areas. One of the biggest advantages is the reduction of carbon emissions compared to gasoline scooters. Electric scooters emit no direct greenhouse gases during their use, making them a cleaner alternative to conventional gasoline scooters. Since the vehicles are lightweight, they also have less indirect carbon emissions, which result from how the electric energy is produced. Figure 1 compares the average carbon emission in gram per passenger kilometer for several urban transport types. By using electricity from

renewable energy sources, the carbon footprint can be further minimized.1 In addition to reducing CO2, electric scooters also help lower pollutant levels. They produce no nitrogen oxides or particulate matter, which can lead to air pollution and health problems, particularly in urban areas. This leads to significantly better air quality and promotes a healthier urban environment. The noise pollution in urban areas can also be significantly reduced due to the lower noise levels of electric motors. The need for additional charging infrastructure is less compared to electric cars because many scooters come with a portable battery that can be easily charged at home. Besides the environmental advantages electric scooters are also more cost efficient. They may be more expensive to purchase in comparison to gasoline scooters, but their operating and maintenance costs are significantly lower. Electric motors have fewer moving parts, which leads to less frequent and cheaper maintenance intervals. Additionally, the cost of electricity is cheaper compared to gasoline, significantly reducing ongoing expenses. Figure 2 compares the costs of traveling 100 km between a gasoline scooter (Nova Motors R9) and an electric scooter (Nova Motors Inoa Sli5) in Germany in late May 2024. For instance, the gasoline scooter consumes 2.4 liters of fuel per 100 km.2 With the average gasoline price in Germany at approximately 1.85 € per liter, this results in fuel costs of around 4.44 € for 100 km. The electric scooter has an energy consumption of 4 kWh for traveling 100km.3 With the current price for electricity in Germany of around 0.3 cents, the costs sum up to 1.2€. Driving an electric scooter therefore saves approximately 73% of the costs compared to a gasoline one.

Operation of an Electric Motor

Electric scooters utilize advanced technologies to efficiently convert electrical energy into mechanical motion. The electric motor is the heart of the scooter. It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, thereby powering the scooter. Electric motors are known for their efficiency and high-power density. The battery stores the electrical energy needed to operate the motor. Modern electric scooters typically use lithium-ion batteries, which offer high energy density and longer lifespan compared to older battery types. The controller acts as the brain of the drive system. It regulates the power supply to the motor, based on the rider's input through the throttle. The controller ensures efficient energy use and affects the acceleration and top speed of the scooter. To better understand the principle of energy conversion, see figure 3. The animated version of figure 3 gives an even better understanding of the mechanical principle.

Figure 3: Functioning principle of an electric motor.

When current flows through a conducting loop (2), a homogeneous magnetic field is generated inside the loop. The magnetic field lines penetrate the loop, resulting in the formation of magnetic north and south poles (3). The orientation of the magnetic field depends on the direction of the current in the loop. Curved magnetic plates (stator poles) are placed on the sides of the loop. When current flows through the loop, it aligns in such a way that the magnetic north pole faces the south pole plate, and the magnetic south pole of the loop faces the plate with the north pole (3 & 4). Once the loop has aligned, it would not move further unless the direction of the current is reversed. To ensure continuous reversal of polarity and thus rotational motion of the loop, a commutator is used. Once the loop is aligned, a gap in the commutator ensures that the current direction in the loop is reversed (5, 6 & 7). This results in continuous rotational motion as long as current flows. To enhance this effect, multiple loops are often used (8). Further optimizations, such as the number of windings in each loop and an iron core, additionally improve the conversion between electrical energy and kinetic energy (9).

Technological Advances

Technological advances continually enhance the efficiency and performance of electric scooters, particularly through improvements in battery technology and the introduction of regenerative braking systems. Recent developments in battery technology have significantly boosted the performance and range of electric scooters. Modern lithium-ion batteries offer higher energy density, allowing for longer ranges without frequent stops. Fast-charging technologies have reduced charging times, enhancing practicality, while advances in battery management systems have increased battery lifespan and safety by ensuring even charge distribution and better temperature control. Regenerative braking improves energy efficiency by recovering kinetic energy lost during braking and using it to recharge the battery. When braking, the electric motor reverses, acting as a generator and converting motion energy back into electrical energy, which is stored in the battery for further use.

Challenges, Legal & Societal Aspects

Despite their benefits, electric scooters face challenges such as effective battery recycling. Battery recycling is critical due to the expensive and environmentally harmful materials like lithium and cobalt used in batteries. Effective recycling minimizes environmental impact and promotes sustainable resource use. Advances in recycling technology and stricter regulatory requirements can ensure high recycling rates. Standardized battery modules that are easier to disassemble and specialized recycling centers are potential solutions. Legal and societal aspects also influence the adoption of electric scooters. Laws and regulations vary by region, with electric scooters often treated like bicycles but subject to specific safety and speed requirements. Compliance with these regulations is crucial for legal and safety reasons. Societal acceptance depends on factors like perceived safety, infrastructure availability, and attitudes towards new technologies. Younger people are more likely to use electric scooters, especially if promoted as environmentally friendly and practical. Educational campaigns and involvement of community leaders can help increase acceptance.
